What are the 2021 colour trends in interior decoration?
We have entered a new year, wanting to give a new touch to our house. The colours we choose help us to increase the feeling of well-being and can have an impact on our mood. In decoration magazines we can follow the latest trends in interior design and seek inspiration for our projects; styles, textures, materials, colours and shapes.
In interior design every detail is important. There are many studies on what effects different shades and colours have on our emotions. Warm colours like red, yellow and orange are stimulating colours that transmit liveliness and activate and energize us. On the other hand, if we are looking for calm and relaxation, for example, in a bedroom, we should choose cold colours such as green, blue or purple, which have a relaxing effect and provide peace and tranquillity.
“You create your own decoration. You choose your color, you choose your mood…. If you are depressed, you put some bright yellow and suddenly you are happy.” –Philippe Starck, designer (in Mallorca he has designed the exclusive marina of Port Adriano, in 2012).
The trend colours in 2021 continue to be neutral colours, that connect with nature, such as different shades of beige, grey and soft brown. White also continues to be the protagonist, a classic that this year is combined with light-coloured woods and neutral colours. Natural and sustainable materials are highlighted, such as different types of wood, bamboo or fabrics, as well as the industrial touch with iron, metal, steel and concrete.
Also, many interior designs in 2021 include colours like soft olive green or deep blue. A darker blue colour is suitable as the “new black”, to create elegant and contemporary spaces. We also see warm tones like mustard yellow, burgundy red, and old pink.
What are PANTONE colours?
For the interior design it is possible to use any colour palette, taking advantage of its infinite tones, undertones or shades.
The Pantone company has a unique colour identification system. They have managed to standardize the colours and identify different shades through numerical codes.
Since 2000, each year they choose a colour of the year, and thereby create trends in the world of graphic arts, fashion and interior design.
For the year 2021 the Pantone company has selected the colours Ultimate Gray and Yellow Illuminating, a grey and a bright yellow. This is the second time that Pantone has selected two colours, which should be presented together and represent unity and mutual support. After a complicated year with many uncertainties, they wanted colours that evoke optimism and strength. “A marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.”
